Ahmed Akbar Sobhan is a well-established Bangladeshi entrepreneur and the chairman of Safwan Bashundhara Global. Through years of steady leadership, he has built a multi-sector business group that plays a significant role in Bangladesh’s industrial and economic development.
He was born on February 15, 1952, in Islampur, a historic area in old Dhaka. As the youngest among six siblings, he was raised in a family environment that emphasized education and professional discipline. His father served as a lawyer at the Dhaka High Court. He went on to complete his higher education at the University of Dhaka, where he studied Business Studies. During his university years, he balanced academic work with participation in sports and other student activities.
His professional journey began in 1978 with entry into the service sector, alongside early involvement in local trading ventures. These experiences helped him gain practical business knowledge and build a strong foundation for future growth.
One of his earliest and most impactful ventures was East West Property Development (Pvt) Ltd. The company quickly gained attention in the real estate sector and became popularly known as Bashundhara Housing. Its success was a key turning point, leading to the launch of larger ventures under his leadership.
He later founded the Bashundhara Group, which expanded across a wide range of sectors, including cement, steel, paper, LP gas, dredging, engineering, and food production. Over the years, the group grew into one of Bangladesh’s most diverse and influential corporate entities.
As chairman of Safwan Bashundhara Global, he continues to oversee the group’s development, focusing on strong management systems, defined responsibilities, and efficient delegation. These principles have supported the company’s long-term success and adaptability.
Outside of his business activities, he remains actively involved in social development efforts. Through personal engagement and corporate responsibility programs, he contributes to initiatives that aim to improve lives and support communities.
